A stain is a colour change, not a protective finish on its own — it always needs to be sealed afterwards with a compatible lacquer or oil.

Dyes vs Stains

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there's a real difference. Dyes are typically more translucent, penetrating the wood fibres to enhance and deepen the existing grain rather than masking it. Stains carry more pigment and sit closer to the surface, giving stronger, more opaque colour coverage — useful for pushing a floor toward a specific shade that's quite different from the timber's natural tone, such as taking a pale oak to black or a deep walnut.

Alcohol-Based Fast-Drying Stains

Much of this range, including Morrells' Light Fast Stain collection, is alcohol-based rather than water or oil-based. These dry quickly and are formulated to be non-grain-raising, meaning the wood fibres don't swell and roughen the surface the way some water-based products can — useful because it reduces the amount of light sanding needed between the staining step and sealing. They're suited to spray, dip or hand application depending on the scale of the job and the finish you're after.

Colourfastness and UV Resistance

Wood exposed to sunlight changes colour over time regardless of finish, and stains vary in how well they resist this. Products described as "light fast," such as Morrells' range, are formulated specifically to resist colour fading under UV exposure — worth checking for floors near large windows or conservatories where fading is more likely to show unevenly across the room.

Nordic and Contemporary Colour Ranges

Alongside traditional wood tones like oak, walnut and mahogany, ranges such as Morrells' Scandi Wood Stain reflect a shift toward cooler, more pigmented colours — greys, whites and muted tones inspired by Scandinavian interior design — as an alternative to the warmer traditional stain shades.

Testing Before Committing

Because stain colour depends on the specific timber, its existing tone, and how many coats are applied, the same stain can look noticeably different on two different floors. Testing on an offcut or an inconspicuous area first — and applying the same number of coats you plan to use on the full floor — gives a far more reliable preview than judging from a swatch or product photo alone.

Common Questions About Wood Dyes and Stains

What's the difference between a wood dye and a wood stain?
Dyes are generally more translucent and enhance the existing grain, while stains carry more pigment and give stronger, more opaque colour coverage. The right choice depends on how much you want to change the wood's natural appearance.

Do I need to seal a stained floor?
Yes — a stain changes colour but doesn't protect the floor on its own. It needs to be sealed afterwards with a compatible lacquer or oil.

Why are some stains described as alcohol-based?
Alcohol-based stains dry quickly and don't raise the wood grain the way some water-based products can, which reduces the amount of sanding needed before sealing.

Will the stain colour look the same as the sample or photo?
Not necessarily — the same stain can look different depending on the specific wood, its natural tone, and how many coats are applied. Testing on an offcut or a hidden area first is the most reliable way to check.
